Fall Campout Wrap Up and News

Hi, everyone.

I’ve been blogging like crazy out there, so I figure it’s time to do one for our Cub Scouts and their parents. Check in from time-to-time, or ask for auto-notification. This is a place where I’ll pass out “props” for great work, collect my musings, and generally let you know how I think things are going with THE PACK.

First, I’d like to thank Rob Beatty—once again—for the great work in putting our campout together for last weekend. He did particularly well in ordering the weather, don’t you think?!?! This was certainly one of our biggest turnouts. We had a lot of first time campers with us, and as I’ve said before, if you didn’t enjoy camping on this one you’ll probably NEVER like camping. It was as close to perfect as I’ve seen.

The kids seemed to enjoy our outings, which I was glad for. My heart skipped a few beats on the cave-exploring excursion in Turner Falls. I did not know we were setting everyone up for that level of challenge, and I promise to be careful not to do that again. My kids said they loved it; my wife, Jenny, was scared half-to-death. I couldn’t make the climb because of my bad foot, but I wish I had been up there just to help everyone get down.

You can see why I like Lake Murray so much. The water is the bluest I’ve come across in the southern states because it is fed mostly by springs. I’ve flown into the airstrip by the golf course many times, and the approach almost looks tropical. The lodge is okay, too, if you don’t want to camp or you want to have a meal there. Also, the Fireside restaurant has a good reputation.

Thanks to Kevin Dinger and the committee for their usual excellent job of organizing and executing. Also my thanks to Mark and Linda Rackers for their work on the webpage that is keeping everyone informed of what is going on.

By the way, we have an opportunity that has popped up for us on October 28 and 29 that could make us some money. We will be selling pumpkins for two days at Frisco Square (across from Pizza Hut Park), until 135 of them are gone. If you are planning to buy a pumpkin for Halloween, the pack would sure appreciate it if you would buy from us. Frisco Square is financing the event, but we get to keep the profits, so your patronage would be most helpful. I know that's a busy weekend, but I'll be sending out sign-up sheets asking for volunteers this week. We need 2-3 adults and however many kids, for each two hour shift during both days. Frisco Square is also supplying the "bank" funds for the change box, and the money box itself.

And finally, don’t forget the wreath sales. We’ll need to get the money to Chuck Green very early in November.
